Heritage

Castles, museums, forts, historical centres, monasteries, churches and cities. This is the architectural heritage of Portugal.

Forests, vineyards, mountains and beaches. This is the natural heritage of Portugal. Fado, folklore, embroidery, carpets and jewellery. This is our cultural heritage.

Centuries of history are etched into the walls of monuments, the cobbled streets, the wide open town squares. This history can be found in the traditional flavours and in the words which are passed on from generation to generation. Centuries of history left by the different peoples who have made these lands their home.

Portugal is among the top fifteen countries of the world for UNESCO World Heritage sites. From the historic centres of Évora, Porto and Guimarães, to Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, to the rock paintings of Foz Côa or the Laurissilva Forest, on the island of Madeira.

Every year, millions of tourists come to Portugal in search of this heritage. And it is with great pride that we show visitors this past which we have carefully preserved.
