Tavira is said to be the architecturally most beautiful and authentic city at the Algarve. The many churches, white houses with their ornate chimneys, the `roman` bridge over the Gilão river characterize the appearance of the city.



You should by no means miss the guided city tour through the Câmara Obscura inside the former watertower of Tavira. On the island Ilha de Tavira in the nature reserve Ria Formosa you can find your inner balance and completely relax while at the same time it offers you the ideal conditions for wind and kite surfing.

Pego do Inferno - beautiful Waterfall der das Baden. At the highway exit Tavira, follow the signs for 3km.

A visit of the Dark Chamber ("Câmara Obscura") in the former watertower of Tavira. Up there, do not miss the small park of the Castle from where you have a great view over Tavira and the Ria Formosa.



A walk through Tavira´s "Rive Gauche", the eastern side of the river with its many local styled restaurants.

In summer, open-air concerts in the old fabric "Fabrica Balsense" and an open-air cinema festival (original versions) in the Monastery.



A trip to the small and authentic village Cacela Velha (ca. 10 km), located directly above the see with wonderful views. Enjoy fresh oysters on the main square of the village or a drink in the beautiful "Café Azul" with arabic influences.

A trip to the nearby fishermen` s village Santa Luzia (ca. 5 km), where you can have excellent fresh fish in the many small restaurants.

A trip to Olhão (ca. 18 km) with its lively Saturday market and a visit to the Parque Natural Ria Formosa („Quinta do Marim“) – there you can find the famous Water Dogs („cão de agua“). In winter, you can observe a lot of birds there.

A Ver Tavira – Portuguese Tapas and A-lá-Carte, next to the castle, great views over Tavira.

Quatro Aguas – fresh fish and seafood, at the harbour, closed on Mondays.

Portas do Mar – specialising in fresh fish and seafood, at the harbour next to Quatro Aguas, closed on Tuesdays.

Beira Rio – directly next to the river, cross the roman bridge and then turn left.

Casa Simão - typical portuguese dishes, simple, inexpensive and tasteful, cross the roman bridge and then turn left.

Alchimira – Portuguese Tapas and specialties from the Alentejo, Rua Joao Vaz Corte Real.
