The island Fogo has, with 2.829 mtrs, the highest mountain of Cabo Verde and the only active vulcano. The centre of the capital São Filipe has buildings from the colonial time.

As the neighboring island of Santiago never had enough agricultural area for its inhabitants, Fogo was used to grow fruits and vegetables for the main island.
Since the late 1800´s, the famous Manecon wine is grown on Fogo as well as the Cape Verdean coffee beans. | |
