Porto/Região do Douro:

Around 100 km from Porto the port wine growing area of the Douro valley begins, which is the oldest registered wine growing area in the world. This picturesque region, that is a must for all wine lovers and travellers in Northern Portugal, was announced as a world cultural heritage by UNESCO. The Douro river sidles through the 800 m high mountains on whose terraces the wine grows. The village Peso de Régua is the main location of the region and the administrative centre for the port wine.

The many antique port wine ships "Rabelos" remind us of how the wine reached Porto in former times. Even more picturesque and quiescent is the village of Pinhão, from where many of the famous port wine Quintas originate. Well worth seeing is the small local train station of Pinhão with its Azulejo tile pictures with scenes of every day life and vintage. At any rate you should join a trip on the Douro from Pinhão or Peso da Régua. Also recommendable is a trip from Porto via boat or train or a combination of both to enjoy beautiful views over the valley, wine slopes and the river.
