The factory that produces rum from sugar cane is worth a visit. The town has the only (and artificial) white sandy beach in Madeira. The location is also perfect for Paragliding. Calheta is the best place on Madeira for a family or beach holiday, with many activities such as watersports, paragliding or hiking paths with different levels available.
The only white sandy beach of Madeira is not an insider tip any more, but all the same very recommendable, best to go during the week.

You should also visit the north and east of Madeira island by excursion or with a rental car. Do not miss a Levada-walk, there are different walks for all levels of fitness.
Restaurant Tips around Calheta:
Ponta do Sol – specialized in Lapas-shells, deliciously prepared with butter and garlic (ca. € 5), beautiful view over the village of Ponta do Sol, only a few tables on the terrace, perfect to come for a sundowner, located in Ponta do Sol.
O Fio Casa de Cha – speciality Espada fish in wine-garlic sauce, beautiful restaurant with terrace, open daily, in Ponta do Pargo underneath the lighthouse.
