Santiago ist die afrikanischste aller Inseln mit fröhlichen Festen, lebendigen und sympathischen Menschen mit farbenfroher Kleidung. Santiago ist auch die grösste Insel der Kapverden und aufgrund der Einwanderung aus den übrigen, wirtschaftlich schwächeren Inseln, die Insel mit der grössten Bevölkerungsdichte. Im Gegensatz zu Sal und Boavista ist Santiago vulkanischen Ursprungs und daher bergig und mit artenreicher Pflanzen- und Tierwelt.
Die Hauptstadt der Hauptinsel der Kapverden ist Praia, dessen Stadtkern oberhalb des Hafens im Stadtteil "Plateau" liegt. Ein Highlight einer Stadtbesichtigung ist der Besuch des lebendigen Marktes: zahllose, teilweise fliegende Händler bieten hier ihre Waren an und in winzigen Garküchen kann man die lokale Küche testen.
